I did something last week that I’d been meaning to do for sometime; I stopped in for a beer at Magoon’s Famous Delicatessen. The business which originally opened across the street in 1918 by namesake Ben Magoon, moved to its permanent home at 632 South 8th in 1925. Present owners Barry and Marjorie Woodhull purchased the place in 2004 and worked on it for two and a half years before it re-opened in 2006, serving the same type of deli sandwiches that made it a Joetown landmark in its heyday, and also serving up some of the best live music in town.

I walked through the door last week, and basically entered a time capsule. The red vinyl booths, the linoleum floor, the vintage meat cases, and the walls, covered with beer bottles and signs from another era. Wow, is it 1967 in here or 1947? (Full story)

Six months ago, if you had told me Bob Walkenhorst, writer and lead singer of The Rainmakers would be calling me on my cell phone, I’d have accused you of being over-served. But danged if it didn’t happen just the other day.

I got an email telling me that Bob and his friend Jeff Porter will be playing an acoustic show at the First Ward Tavern, on Saturday March 29th, beginning at 9pm. They were nice enough to include Bob’s personal cell phone number, in case I wanted to interview him. Is my job cool or what?

So before I called, I thought it prudent to get a little online update. I always dug the band when they were getting radio play around here in the 80s. I even spent some hard earned dollars to buy a couple of their albums. (Ok, it was cassette tapes). But I lost touch with them in the 90s and was excited for the opportunity to catch up. The pointy toed boot crowd won’t have far to go to reach the new home
for their favorite downtown country spot. Buffalo Bar has moved from
their current home in the 500 block of Felix, to a larger venue right
across the street.

Local club owner and entrepreneur extraordinaire, Tracy Allen informs
us that the new location, which opened the  first of March, is the
former location of Mirrors Night Club. It’s a bittersweet decision for Ms.
Allen after a 7 year run. But as the only country venue downtown, it was
the logical thing to do. (Full story)

Once upon a time in 1977, a young man had a dream. That dream came true
and Record Wear House was born. If I could only last 5 years, that
would be great. 31 years later, I’m still thinking if R.W.H. could last
only 5 more years. I’ve always said I’m a dinosaur that refuses to die.

This story is not for old school music lovers, but is a reaching out to
the youth today for some answers. What does music mean to you today?
Is it an art form you are willing to support? (That means you pay to see
or hear the artist.)  Or is music just a collection of songs with no
faces, songs that provide the soundtrack to your life? (Full story)

I had always considered myself a lucky person. It was only later in life that I realized it has a lot more to do with decision making than luck. I’ll use the example of smoking. It’s not accurate to say somebody is lucky because they don’t smoke. That person made a judgment; they didn’t roll a dice and hope for the best. These decisions add up in your favor or they don’t. You won’t know the whole score of some of these choices until it’s said and done. Even then you’re not around to enjoy it. With that said, I’m glad that I’ve made music and the decision to form/join the WayStation a part of my life.

Oh, the best laid plans. I had three stops to make Saturday night, including the big benefit show at the Last Call. Unfortunately for all involved, Mother Nature reared her ugly head and blasted us with artic temperatures and everybody’s favorite, freezing rain. I actually fired up the old “Bone-mobile” and scraped the windshield clean to make an attempt, but before I went even a dozen blocks, the clear spot had reduced to a football size hole and I gave up the ghost and turned around. I am but a lowly rock critic that is not talented enough to have an amplifier placed firmly in the middle of the tempest so I recognize that I am not qualified to decree definitely whether or not St. Joe has a thriving music scene. Granted, I do have opinions and theories on the subject but I will, for this article at least, try to set them aside. I have covered and discussed local music in print for over three years now; first, as a columnist for the dearly departed Mule News and now from time to time as an independent writer with The Regular Joe. Over these past few years, I have witnessed joy and sadness, success and failure, both at their highest and lowest of levels. (Full story)

I read the nice story in the last issue about Kathleen Holeman’s show at 36th Street. As I was trying to decide what to write about for this issue, I decided to go a different direction. In fact, the band I’m featuring here may be the exact polar opposite of the sweet, mellow jazz offered up by Ms. Holeman. (Full story)
