Local filmmaker and Western student, D Byron, is looking for cast and crew to get involved with a new film project entitled “Corporate Cinema 10,” a comedy about kids working in a movie theater. Similar to motion pictures like “Clerks” and “Waiting,” CC10 follows the lives of minimum wagers as they stave off boredom by mocking customers, making dirty jokes and knowing way, way too much movie trivia.

Auditions were held May 26th, but there are still parts to cast; anyone interested in acting or working behind the camera should contact D Byron at 816-232-8947. (Full story)

Fans are a strange phenomenon. I have to admit to having a morbid fascination with those unique individuals who have an abnormal obsession with some aspect of pop culture.

Who are these people?

What twisted aspect of their lives have they turned off in order to “turn on” to things like Star Trek, Star Wars, NASCAR, Jimmy Buffett and Elvis worship?

Now, bare in my mind, as a pop culture nut, I too have to admit to having a mild obsession with the things that will temporarily yank me out of the world of deadlines and bill paying. But my departure is only temporary…. After all, I live in the real world, right? (Full story)

There is no better summertime experience then the Drive-In.

Hands down… Okay, outside sailing the Pacific coastline, it is the one, consistent, warm weather activity that helps me erase the days’ pressures and surrender myself to the simple idea of enjoying the moment.

There is something magical about it, something Zen…. and ironically, it is so basic: watching movies under the stars.

As a “Generation Xer” I feel very grateful that some of my earliest “moviegoing” memories are that of safely sitting in “Shultz Family Truckster” and suddenly being mentally transported to a whole different world… several worlds, in fact. (Full story)

People are idiots.

Not every person, mind you… but if you regularly attend movies, you are no stranger to this phenomenon.

I have to admit, as a person I see more movies then the average Joe; I’m far more accustomed to seeing the bottom end of the cinema-social food chain then most.. And I’m certainly not making a normative claim on EVERYBODY who buys a ticket. (Full story)

Money tight?  Movie going on a budget? Well, don’t forget the value of “Budget Theatres” - The same movie for a third of the price. Film Reviewer Sam Hendrix gives us Regular Joes his perspective on the Jack Black comedy, “Be Kind Rewind.”

Be Kind? Be Real!By Sam Hendrix

For many avid movie collectors, the switch from VHS to DVD was a very painful and agonizing process. Many even referred to this leap in technology as a “fad” that would soon parish much like Laserdisc. This was the case for a tiny video rental store in

Passaic, New Jersey, the official home of the blues and hometown of legendary bluesman, Fats Waller. (Full story)

Long ago in a galaxy far, far away….. That is how the whole thing started, back in the 1970’s before many of its rabid fans were even born. A movie dynasty came at us from outer-space that grabbed the planet like nothing before it and nothing since. Now for the first time in

St. Joseph, you can view all six of these space epics in their proper order, all in one long day at the East Hills Public Library Theater. You will notice that we don’t mention the name of the series, or any of the titles. That is because the rights to them are so tightly controlled by the writer director, that they can only be shown in this venue without publicizing the names. Because of this, the Library has chosen to call this promotion, “Day of the Droids.”  We’ll count on our savvy readers being able to figure it out. (Full story)

The holiday season has, in the past, always been a time when box office numbers hit sky high with the string of “Oscar worthy” movies that hit mainstream theaters but this year has seen lower numbers than 2006.

Bringing in $8.7 billion since January 1st, this figure is down 0.9% from the year-to-date totals in 2006 of $9.2 billion (www.boxofficemojo.com). Not since the 6.1% decrease from 2004-2005 has the movie industry lost money from the year before. This has many movie goers questioning what exactly has caused this decrease of box office intake. Some blame the high price of gas; others say tickets cost too much; many blame the lack of interest in Hollywood movies. All are valid points when considering the possibilities of the financial downfall of the movie industry this year. With gas so high as well as ticket prices, this limits the frequency of attending movies by the regular audience. A result of the peak of gas prices is the increase of most essential items such as food and other living necessities. This has scraped the pockets of audiences across the nation directly contributing to the less money available for entertainment purposes. (Full story)

A long time ago, in a time not so far away… there existed a Holiday TV special that the makers were sure would be as popular as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Perhaps, it would even be bigger then Charlie Brown and his anemic Christmas tree. It had adventure; it had music, wild colors, and it had a cast that was loved the world over.

It was to be a sure fire hit; a slam-dunk for years to come. An epic of “appointment Television” that fans and advertisers alike would swoon to year after year. (Full story)

My original thought for this issue was to do a top 10 list of favorite Christmas Movies. Go online, talk to a few friends and throw something together. Then, the more I thought about it, I realized our twisted readers would probably more appreciate a worst list.

The internet is such a great tool for this kind of stuff. I thought maybe I’d try to find ten top ten lists and compile the numbers to come up with the Mother of all Lists. Make a comment or two on each one, and it’s on to the eggnog. One problem, every list is completely different. When you leave out the Christmas aspect, the lists are fairly consistent. You’ve got your “Citizen Kane”, “Raging Bull”, etc. etc. Apparently it’s when you add Christmas to the mix that everything gets all screwy. (Full story)

The greatest movie ever, you ask? Surely this is satire. It would be blasphemy to think that a dumb comedy could ever be spoken of in the same breath as Citizen Kane, Gone With the Wind, or even The Godfather, as the jewels of American Cinema.

Well listen up movie snobs, as I introduce it to those who haven’t yet been seduced by its charms, and then compare and contrast it with these other seemingly dissimilar movies. (Full story)
