By Bob ShultzSpecial Movie; Special Event

“The Big Lebowski” kicks off Plaza 8 Theatres’ Cult Cinema Series: November 14 and 15, both nights. $6 admission, come in costume.

The beauty of having an independent movie house in town is that it can do A LOT of things that you don’t regularly see at other movie houses. Manager David Allison has been filling me in for months on some of the unique events that could be done with the revamped Plaza 8 Theatres… including bringing back films that have found an audience LONG after their initial release.

Case in point: the Coen Brothers fan-favorite, “The Big Lebowski.” A 1998 film featuring Jeff Bridges as a middle-aged slacker, who calls himself “The Dude.” And who has a passion for Captain Beefheart albums and glasses of White Russians.

After being mistakenly robbed, he is drawn into a bizarre

Hollywood underworld of performance artists, starlets and general circus freaks. It’s a twisted “trip to Oz” with his bowling team partners assisting and distracting him along the way. It may not be the most coherent of the films from Joel and Ethan Coen, but it remains one of the most endearing. In other words, a great cult film to start off this new chapter for the Plaza 8 theaters.

Save your ticket stubs from either of the performances on the 14th and 15th. Olympia Lanes will give you a FREE GAME of bowling with a ticket stub (contact Olympia Lanes for details.) And for you “Dudettes” and “Dudeans” over 21, Fosters on the Felix Street Experience will be offering a Lebowski inspired drink special with the same ticket stub.

Movie In Production: Help Wanted!

Producer D Byron and Director Layne Hull are joining me in the pre-production for the sequel for Byron’s 2006 feature, “Lewis and Clark Trail of Blood.” The aptly working-titled “Trail of Blood 2” promising more b-movie horror thrills then the first.

As the script comes together, the need for volunteer actors and crew members has already become apparent. If you’re interested in being part of what is sure to be another underground treasure contact trailofblood@gmail.com. You can also surf www.facebook.com and search for “trail of blood 2” to find out more information on this 2009 production. Cast, Crew, and extras all needed.

Want more info on upcoming films? Come to the Film Alliance of the Midland Empire (FAME) meeting on Thursday, November 20th, , at the East Hills Library Theatre. It’s open for all ages and to all persons regardless of age, talent or experience.
