When we started this paper last year, we knew that being a bi-weekly instead of a daily might occasionally give us some headaches. Here is a perfect example:  Last week I wrote a brilliant piece on graffiti (if I do say so), and submitted it for this issue. Then I open Monday’s NewsPress to see a big editorial on the subject. They even had pictures of some of the same graffiti I was using. Crap!

My first thought was that someone on our staff was acting as a mole, feeding our story ideas to the boys on the hill. Then I remembered we don’t really have a staff, so I guess I’ll have to mark it down to coincidence. I will grudgingly allow they did a nice job on their piece, even if it lacked the humor and curse words that have helped build my readership into the high double digits. (Full story)

The city is buzzing about the school district. It has been for a while now. And it seems the buzz is not about to die down. Everyone has something to say regarding the plans to rebuild, relocate, renovate and raze a variety of the school houses we know here in town. As I mentioned last issue, I have spent some time asking a variety of folks their opinions, and more importantly for our purpose, their memories of our school district and the school houses that are no more. The most fruitful of these conversations was shared with Mr. Don Lentz, former principle of

Bode

Middle School. (Full story)

As I sit here looking out the window I see a robin running around in the yard and I know it’s almost time again. Time again for that yearly ritual of tromping in the woods looking for that elusive tasty morel mushroom.

It stared for me back in the spring of 1971, I had just moved into a five acre farm (as my parents called it) in the out skirts of

north St.

Joe. Our fence line was the city limits which soon became annexed for taxes and a new middle school to take place of the strawberry farm where we always partook of a few on our way home from school each day. The excuse we used for the farmer was we were making sure he still had the best berries around. (Full story)

Kansas City developers John Johntz and Andy Battmer are putting the finishing touches on their plans to convert the historic United Department Store into loft space. The building, located at the intersection of 6th and Felix Streets, will have classic

New York style offices and residential lofts with large, wide open spaces and huge windows for plenty of light.

“We find that people really love the large, open floor plans. It allows them to move around and the flexibility to be creative with their space.” says Andy Battmer. ”These types of tenants are also drawn to historic buildings like the

United

Building with its unique features. The building is a neoclassical design with beautiful fluted columns on the facade with acanthus leaves and flower rosettes as decorations.” (Full story)

My dad really suckered me in when he asked me to write a “green” story for The Regular Joe. He knows how I feel about this kind of stuff, and that even though I’m still on the East Coast, I couldn’t resist sounding off on how a “bottle bill” might benefit my hometown. Then he forwarded the emails, both pro and con. I was really surprised by how many people took the time to respond.

Now, dear old dad calls again and asks, “How about editing the Joe Green page every issue?”

I’m sure there are many better qualified candidates out there, but maybe no others that are willing to work for free. So, in spite of the old adage, “you get what you pay for,” I will use my minor in Environmental Policy for something after all, and do my best. (Full story)

Dear Joe,I saw where you were considering bringing some copies to the Southside. I say it’s about time! There are a number of high traffic locations down here in God’s country. Kovak’s, Betty’s,

Southgate and Grand Slam Ice Cream would all be good choices.

Thanks for adding us to your list of drop off points and keep up the good work.Southside Pride (Full story)

My wife hates painted walls. I never caught on to this until after we were married. I’m not saying it would have changed my mind, but it’s definitely something I feel she should have disclosed prior to the engagement.

As we toured what would become our first home together, she kept saying cryptic things like, “hmmm, I think we could do something with this room.” I thought she meant hang a picture here, put a throw rug there, that kind of thing. Ha! Little did I know.

She’s pretty devious that one. She waited until after we had signed our names a couple of hundred times at the closing before suggesting a stop to look at wallpaper on the way home. (Full story)

Vince CapellCity Manager

A young man struck up a conversation with an older man who he knew had been married to the same woman for more than fifty years. Impressed by the older man’s matrimonial achievements, the young man asked… “How have you managed to stay married to the same woman for more than fifty years?” The older man paused, pondered the question, then answered… “I guess I just didn’t expect much!”

Whew!! Not exactly the response we anticipated, is it? Absent is this gentleman’s sweet and passionate response about how his life’s partner had met his every need for fifty plus years. Gone is the gracious reply about how his loving wife had time-and-again done more for him than he had done for her. Nope! None of that! Instead, we get a response that demonstrates how something meaningful and measurable, fifty plus years of marriage, can sometimes be achieved without caring or expectation. (Full story)

People are idiots.

Not every person, mind you… but if you regularly attend movies, you are no stranger to this phenomenon.

I have to admit, as a person I see more movies then the average Joe; I’m far more accustomed to seeing the bottom end of the cinema-social food chain then most.. And I’m certainly not making a normative claim on EVERYBODY who buys a ticket. (Full story)

I spent a very long time thinking about what historic treasure to hunt for this edition of The Regular Joe. There were several great stories that started to unfold on the blank pages I see when I close my eyes. I began mapping out how I would tell the story of old school houses that are no longer here. Some very great contacts have been provided to me but I will need more time to further develop this story. Don’t worry, it is coming. But for now, there is a little taste of this history in this week’s feature. Still I didn’t think I was quite ready to tell that story; maybe next issue. (Full story)
