Well, we survived another drive-in season; our fourth in a row. A lot of people said we were crazy when we first announced our plans back in ’03. (A lot of them were right!)  But crazy or not, the drive-in is here to stay. Through sheer stubborn persistence and the continued patronage of our customers and corporate sponsors, we are gearing up for season five starting this spring.  We have good reason to be optimistic as we look ahead. When we opened in June of ’04, we became the 10th movie screen in town. We were thrilled when our first season numbers were way beyond our expectations. (Full story)

The

Glore

Psychiatric

Museum
chronicles the 130-year history of what was once known as the “State Lunatic Asylum No. 2.” The Museum uses full-sized replicas, interactive displays, audio-visuals, artifacts, and documents to illustrate the history of the treatment of mental illness. The museum is recognized as “one of the 50 most unusual Museums in the country.” It is also featured in the book “1,000 Places to See Before You Die in the

USA
and

Canada
.”

The

Glore Psychiatric Museum is named for its founder George Glore, who spent most of his 41-year career with the Missouri Department of Mental Health nurturing its collections into arguably the largest and best single exhibition explaining the evolution of mental health care in the

United States
. His ultimate goal was to reduce the stigma associated with psychiatric treatment for patients, their families, and their communities. (Full story)

1. That Causers, regardless of their cause, no longer equate the volume with which they make their argument with the value of the argument they make.

2. That Global Warmers realize that they make themselves look foolish to hold onto their original Chicken Little premise without considering new information.

3. That those that deny the factual base of Global Warming realize that conservation of energy is just a rational idea when denuded of the hype.

4. To find a way of getting through to people who start their arguments with ”I feel” to rather begin them with “I think”, so that I do not automatically dismiss what follows as poorly reasoned. (Full story)

Hey Joe,

I must say I thought I knew a lot about beer. The history involving Country Club has long been among my favorite bar talk topics. But I really had no idea the scope of St. Joe’s role in

America’s favorite drink…at least my favorite drink. Thanks for the insight!

Later dude. (Full story)

The last few issues had us visiting several commercial public establishments in our never ending search for the interesting and unusual. While that was wonderful fun, this issue gives us the opportunity to return to our roots, so to speak, as we visit a local residence and snoop around.

I had heard about the “Cookie Jar Nurse” for some time. Supposedly there is an elderly nurse still working somewhere at

Heartland Hospital who lives in a big old house filled with Cookie Jars. My lovely bride has a modest cookie jar collection herself and is coincidentally also a nurse. Whenever I comment on a new addition she always says, “Hey, at least I’m not the Cookie Jar Nurse. She has 10,000 cookie jars and counting!” (Full story)

As a guy who does his best to keep up with what’s current in the business, I listen to a lot of new music, both live and pre-recorded. There is a lot to like for sure, but also a whole lot that just sounds the same. I always have my ears open for an original sound, an artist that is recognizable almost instantly from the first notes of a new song. There are so few of them out there.

I was driving home one recent evening from a local venue, where I sat through an hour of listening to another Limp Bizkit wannabe, shouting unintelligible lyrics and compensating for a lack of musical ability with volume and angry posturing. I had a slight headache and needed a little something to detox my overloaded brain. I glanced through the CD case looking desperately for some mental salve, and pulled out an old chestnut, “Harvest” by Neil Young. (Full story)

As with many things we do here at The Regular Joe, our “Joe of the Year” promotion started out as an offhand comment. We were sitting around the conference room brainstorming ideas for the New Year. Somebody said, “We could have a Joe of the Year contest, but someone would probably nominate the shopping cart guy with the feathers in his hat.”  The conversation took a decidedly downward path, as we tried to top each other with a succession of worse and worse candidates.

Once we beat that idea thoroughly into the ground, we realized that letting the readers vote for J.O.T.Y. would be a great way to engage our audience. We’ve been thrilled with the reception the paper has received in its short lifespan. We keep close track of our distribution numbers and they keep rising each issue as more and more of you find us. The next step in our evolution is to increase our contributions from the public and get more feedback on our website, urjoe.com. This seemed like a great way to do both. (Full story)
