It has been said that necessity is the mother of invention. I can’t say that is absolutely accurate until someone explains the spork, but I will admit it is a major impetus. What is missed most often is even truer in my estimation: that greed is the evil step-mother of all innovation. (Full story)

Dear Joe,

I read with contempt the story titled Elections Smelections. Try as he might to disguise his agenda, the author’s liberal, pinko Democratic essence comes shining right on through. I generally like your otherwise fine publication but could do without these dangerous, shortsighted views.

Well here we are, it’s Christmastime once more and the magic of the season is all around us. When I was a kid it seemed like Christmas would never get here. Now, the older I get, it seems like it was just over and here it comes again. And again… And again… You see, I have a confession to make: I hate Christmas. Call me Scrooge, call me Grinch, I don’t care. (Full story)

One of the weird things about putting out a paper like this is trying to find your voice. You go in with some preconceived ideas for content, not even knowing if the first copy will be read. I can’t tell you what a pleasant surprise it is to walk into a location with the new issue and having people holler out, “Hey, the new Joe is here!”

So now after 5 issues, we’re starting to get feedback. You like the Old Joe feature, with stories and pictures of St. Joe history. Count on more of the same in the coming year, and as always, please contact us with your suggestions and contributions. (Full story)

I used to hear this and other gems from my Father and Grandfather: when I was your age I used to have to get up before I went to bed to go to work, for Christmas all I got was a stick and a rock and I was glad to have them etc, etc. (Full story)

Well, it’s time to find another $100 car again. I started to say this was a relatively new phenomenon, but it’s really not. I started out with $100 cars. The first one was a 1964 Buick Special I bought at 16 with money I made working at Miller’s Grill. (Still the best tenderloin I ever had). It was a honey with custom plastic slip covers that left brand new upholstery when I cut them off. (Full story)

I just love Ruth Costello. I met this diminutive dynamo through a project involving her employer, Triumph Foods. After learning of my involvement with The Regular Joe, she asked about advertising rates for a charity project. I asked a few questions, and found out about Grace House, a program that distributes clothing and other items to the less fortunate, that literally started in her garage. Our fledgling publication can’t afford to turn away ad dollars, but after hearing her story, I thought a CLAMS piece would be more appropriate. (Full story)

As always, I like to start this column by telling you a little of my related memories from other places in the Mid-West. So as the Christmas holiday approaches I began thinking of my favorite activities that helped to build the Yuletide spirit.

There are a number of things: baking cookies, putting up the pine, drinking copious amounts of eggnog, the list could go on well past the “Twelve Days of Christmas.” But one thing that I did not think of until my seven year old daughter made a simple request. (Full story)

Oh, the best laid plans. I had three stops to make Saturday night, including the big benefit show at the Last Call. Unfortunately for all involved, Mother Nature reared her ugly head and blasted us with artic temperatures and everybody’s favorite, freezing rain. I actually fired up the old “Bone-mobile” and scraped the windshield clean to make an attempt, but before I went even a dozen blocks, the clear spot had reduced to a football size hole and I gave up the ghost and turned around. My original thought for this issue was to do a top 10 list of favorite Christmas Movies. Go online, talk to a few friends and throw something together. Then, the more I thought about it, I realized our twisted readers would probably more appreciate a worst list.

The internet is such a great tool for this kind of stuff. I thought maybe I’d try to find ten top ten lists and compile the numbers to come up with the Mother of all Lists. Make a comment or two on each one, and it’s on to the eggnog. One problem, every list is completely different. When you leave out the Christmas aspect, the lists are fairly consistent. You’ve got your “Citizen Kane”, “Raging Bull”, etc. etc. Apparently it’s when you add Christmas to the mix that everything gets all screwy. (Full story)
